Manipur Civil Groups Demand NRC Update and AFSPA Repeal

Imphal: Five civil society groups want an immediate end to violence in Manipur. They demand the government update the National Register of Citizens using 1951 as the base year before starting the Census. Sorokhaibam Sanjoy, president of the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation, announced these demands at a public meeting in Uripok Sorbon Thingel Haorongbam Leikai.

The coalition includes AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR, and the Manipuri Students' Federation. They want the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls scrapped. They also insist that internally displaced persons return to their homes. Furthermore, they want the government to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

Sanjoy blamed the central government for the ongoing regional chaos. He claimed the state is suffering because of an "undemocratic approach" taken by New Delhi. He blasted the massive deployment of central security forces. The forces have failed to keep people safe. He wants those troops out of the state immediately.

The groups warned of a massive public movement if these grievances remain ignored. A torch rally at Eroisemba bolstered the cause. The Eroisemba Youth Development Club and the Eroisemba Apunba Meira Paibi Lup organized the protest to show their support. Tensions are rising fast.
