Three Manipur MLAs Back Call to Block Census Until NRC Update

Imphal: Three Manipur lawmakers signed a declaration backing a demand to halt the upcoming Census. They want the 1951 National Register of Citizens updated first. The JFD Women Wing collected these signatures on the seventh day of their No NRC, No Census movement.

The group submitted a five-point memorandum to various MLAs across the state. They demanded clarity on the issue. The wing sought a formal commitment from officials to keep the Census operations on ice until the NRC update is resolved. The movement is gaining momentum.

Tongbram Robindro Singh from the 28-Thanga Assembly Constituency signed the form on October 8. Okram Ibobi Singh of 31-Thoubal and Surjakanta Okram of 35-Khangabok also added their names. The JFD Women Wing stated that the MLAs expressed support for the cause and signed the declaration. The group noted: "The MLAs expressed support for the issue raised by the campaign and signed the declaration, which was enclosed with the memorandum as an annexure."

Sougrakpam Sumati Devi, the convenor of the JFD Women Wing, led the campaign. She continues to press for a firm stance from all state legislators.
