Manipur Protests Demand NRC Before Census

Imphal: Manipur is heating up. Students from Konsam Tomba and Sachi School in Khurai Laishram Leikai, Imphal East, marched in the streets to demand the National Register of Citizens wrap up before the Census. The students chanted, "No NRC, No Census," while turning up the pressure on state officials regarding demographic fears.

The push is gaining political muscle. Legislators are now backing the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) Women’s Wing signature campaign. Sapam Ranjan, who serves as a Manipur government spokesperson and Konthoujam MLA, signed the petition. He was joined by Nambol MLA Thounaojam Basanta Kumar and Lamsang MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen.

Civil society groups continue to argue that verifying the state population must happen before any national headcount. With students and politicians joining forces, the demand for NRC implementation has turned into a major public movement.
