Manipur protesters demand NRC update and AFSPA repeal

Imphal: Protesters gathered at Singjamei Naorem Leikai in Imphal West for the third day of a sit-in. The All Manipur United Clubs Organisation led the event alongside AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR, and MSF. The demonstration kicked off on September 13. Tensions remain high.

The groups demand six specific actions. They want the National Register of Citizens updated using 1951 as the base year. They want the Special Intensive Revision 2026 of electoral rolls scrapped. Further demands include resettling internally displaced people, repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, protecting state integrity, and ending the current conflict. AMUCO representative Sorokhaibam Sanjoy Singh said, "The prolonged crisis had severely affected communities across the state, while internally displaced people continue to live in relief camps under difficult conditions."

Organizers pointed to illegal immigration and claimed a foreign hand drives the violence. Sanjoy Singh blamed the government for failing to act. He urged state leaders to force the Centre into action on the NRC. The protest will keep running. They promised to escalate the movement if authorities ignore their grievances.
