Imphal: Manipur authorities are overhauling how they handle news. The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) must now draft a formal digital media policy and set up a registration system for online news outlets. Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Sunil Singh handed down the order on Sunday at the 78th Information and Public Relations Day in Imphal.
The department needs more speed. Singh wants mainstream media to get government updates faster so they can feature official news more prominently. He also demanded more daily reports in Meiteilon, or Manipuri, to better reach the state’s 36 distinct communities. Officials must find practical ways to push this language through all official channels alongside standard English releases.
Digital chaos creates real problems. Information and Public Relations Secretary Neeta Arambam warned that false information moves just as quickly as the truth. She said, "The department’s responsibility to ensure that information disseminated through official channels remains truthful, accurate and responsible." The agency is now leaning on its newly launched website to verify facts for the public.
Staff numbers remain thin. Additional Director W. Phajatombi Devi opened the event at the Nityaipat Chuthek auditorium, noting the small team carries a massive workload. Additional Director T. Ramesh Singh closed the program with a vote of thanks for the attendees, which included department pensioners and local media representatives.
