Maring Community Demands Release of MUA Official Held by Manipur Police

Imphal: Manipur Police arrested Maring Uparup Assembly general secretary Ch. Merungkham on the morning of October 27. The Maring Napuya Yinglam organization now demands his immediate and unconditional release. They claim the detention lacks any legal basis.

Protesters gathered at Tuishimi Keithel near Pallel on Thursday to voice their anger. The event brought together the Pallel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, MNY, MUA, and the Maring Students Union. MNY president Adim called on Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam to force the issue.

A Kakching district commando team grabbed Merungkham on suspicion. They leveled several allegations against him. MUA president W. Hangshing Maring dismissed these claims as entirely baseless. He noted that the official has spent his time working for community welfare and peaceful coexistence. He stated, "The allegations are unfounded and should be established through a fair investigation."

Hangshing urged leaders to stick to lawful methods while warning that the state must not fuel further resentment. The community has shown restraint, but that patience is wearing thin. PAMPL finance secretary Romita Leimapokpam echoed these calls. The group demands the state government intervene now to resolve the situation before tensions boil over.
