MEELAL Enforces Strict Meetei Mayek Script Rules Across Manipur

Imphal: MEELAL is coming for your signs. The Manipuri Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup has shifted from voluntary compliance to strict enforcement regarding the display of Meetei Mayek script. All banners, hoardings, and public advertisements in Manipur’s valley districts must now follow specific rules.

The script must sit at the top of every display. Its lettering size must be at least two-thirds larger than any other script present. This mandate applies to everyone: government departments, private businesses, and individuals.

Volunteers are already patrolling the valley to inspect promotional materials. MEELAL will summon event organizers and flex-printing shop owners to their head office if they catch them breaking the rules. An executive meeting held in September 2026 solidified these measures.

The group insists they will not back down. They maintain that there will be no compromise in their efforts to protect and promote the indigenous language and script. Outside of their enforcement drive, the group also issued a call regarding the upcoming Ningol Chak-Kouba festival. They urged families to keep celebrations simple and warned against consumerism. MEELAL stated that "love, affection and family bonds should remain at the heart of Ningol Chak-Kouba." They want people to avoid foreign-made goods, preferring local fruits, traditional food, and handloom fabrics for the holiday on the second day of Hiyangei.
