Imphal Exhibition Showcases Three Generations of Manipuri Art

Imphal: The Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur, opened a new exhibition at the Manipur State Art Gallery in the Palace Compound, Imphal, on November 3. Curated by Dr. RK Tamphasana Devi, the show presents the works of the late Maikel Meetei, S. Satyajit Singh, and L. Sushil. It highlights their different perspectives on local life.

Maikel Meetei, who lived from 1972 to 2021, graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft in Agartala. He used oil and acrylic to paint rivers, mountains, and the lives of Manipuri women. His creative reach went beyond painting to include sculpture, music, and teaching.

S. Satyajit Singh, born in 1978, also studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Agartala. He works in pen, ink, charcoal, and acrylic. He captures social experiences and landscapes with precision. He contributes heavily to the local scene through the Manipur Artists Forum. He has shown his art across several cities in India. The exhibition creates a space where visitors can see how different artists define their home. It offers a chance to "rediscover Manipur through different artistic sensibilities, from quiet reflection and social observation to the expressive play of colour."

L. Sushil, born in 1984, is the youngest of the trio. He holds an MFA from the Government College of Art and Craft, Agartala. He previously worked as a guest faculty member at Manipur University. He uses watercolour, oil, and acrylic to focus on movement and light. His art has reached galleries in Bangkok and Dhaka.

The event serves students and enthusiasts. It links three generations of creators. The gallery remains open for those wanting to study the depth of the state's contemporary visual art.
