Imphal: The Yumjao Mayum Living Art Academy staged the 64 Rasa tradition at Ramji Prabhu Mandir in Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal. This production falls under the Chief Ministergi Artistesingi Tengbang 2025-26 project. Organizers started the event with a floral tribute honoring the late Padma Shri awardee Sougaijam Thanil.
Academy secretary Yumnam Bhumeshwar addressed the crowd. He traced the roots of the Rasa tradition back to the Natya Shastra. While ancient scholars initially recognized eight Rasas, the count eventually rose to nine with the addition of Shanta Rasa. Maharaj Chandrakirti brought the 64 Rasa tradition to Manipur. It draws heavy influence from the Gaudiya Vaishnavite practices linked to Gouranga Mahaprabhu.
Bhumeshwar voiced alarm over the disappearing art form. "Fewer people are now practising and preserving the traditional art form," he said. The academy hopes this push will safeguard Manipur's cultural heritage for younger generations. Scholars, gurus, and local artists attended the showcase. The academy plans to host more events to ensure the practice survives in the state.
