Imphal: Manipur Minister Loken Singh warned civil society groups against threatening local artists during the inauguration of the Thakhaisida Manipuri Theatre at the Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium in Imphal East. He labeled culture the face of Manipur to the world. Artists need safety. The minister spoke during the Seva Sankalp Utsav 2026, an event managed by the Department of Art and Culture.

Loken Singh insisted that society must protect its creators to maintain peace and harmony. He stated, "Culture exists because society exists," while acknowledging the difficulty of shifting public mindsets amid state unrest. The Department of Art and Culture aims to increase awareness about the work of legendary artists among the youth.

Padma Shri recipient Sabitri Heisnam demanded more resources for theatre professionals. She specifically requested the repair and restoration of several dilapidated venues, including the Langmeidong Dramatic Union, Chorus, Rupmahal, and Kalakshetra. These spaces are vital for practice and performance.

The event also featured the play Narasingh (Awa Ngamba) from the People's Arts and Dramatic Association of Imphal East, written by the late Lairenmayum Ibungohal Singh. Notable attendees included Art and Culture Director Keithellakpam Dinamani Singh, filmmaker Aribam Shyam Sharma, and committee chairman Mongjam Joy.
