Imphal: Indigenous communities gathered in Imphal to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026. Two separate events prioritized the protection of local knowledge and the push for regional unity.
The D.M. College of Arts hosted a program focused on traditional midwives. Organizers included the Yelhoumee Phurup, Manipur International Youth Centre, People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur, United Zeliangrongpui Coordination Committee, Rongmei Naga Council Manipur, Zeliangrong Union, Kabui Mothers’ Association Manipur, and the Research Club of Dhanamanjuri University. The event centered on the theme “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.”
Speakers identified Mayok Maibi, Chabok Maibi, and Chabokpi among the Meiteis, as well as Naga caregivers, as essential frontline workers. These practitioners offer crucial support in remote areas where hospitals are scarce. Attendees called for integrating this traditional knowledge into formal healthcare while providing midwives with better training and emergency resources.
The gathering raised alarms over environmental decay. Participants warned against deforestation, biodiversity loss, and the impact of poppy cultivation and oil-palm monoculture. They demanded stronger land rights and insisted on Free, Prior and Informed Consent before any major shifts in land use. Organizers advocated for reviving sustainable practices like organic farming and traditional handlooms. Prof. Ch. Sheelaramani, Prof. Th. Rabikanta Singh, Dr. L. Phaomei, and Dhiren A. Sadokpam attended the session.
Meanwhile, the League of Indigenous People’s Upliftment held a separate observance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy. Their event, themed “Unity and Diversity: Strengthening the Indigenous Community of Manipur,” focused on regional solidarity. Attendees released an official song and lit candles to mark the occasion.
LIPUL Vice-President Phijam Shyamchand stressed the necessity of collective action. He stated, “We fight for Integrity.” The program featured remarks from Dr. Waikhom Romesh, Dhiren A. Sadokpam, Chabungbam Birendra, Turner Raihing, Ashang Kasar, Merachao Inka, Chingdinliu Panmei, Akhiu Ngaomei, and Wairohk Hangshing Maring. Representatives from COCOMI, AMUCO, and JFD also participated. Moderators Dr. RK Nimai and Somorendro Thokchom steered the discussions toward safeguarding indigenous heritage and identity.
