Manipur Cabinet Greenlights Medical College and Boosts Athlete Rewards

Imphal: The Manipur Cabinet approved a new medical college for Senapati. It will accept 100 MBBS students annually. Officials plan to upgrade the existing district hospital to support the facility. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh chaired the August 11 meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Mantripukhri. He stated the government remains committed to "transparent, accountable and people-centric governance."

Athletes stand to gain from significant pay hikes. Medalists and participants from the Asian and Commonwealth Games will receive more cash. Gold winners earn Rs 20 lakh, silver gets Rs 15 lakh, and bronze takes Rs 10 lakh. Participants receive Rs 4 lakh. These rates apply to athletes from the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Sports administration saw several personnel shifts. L Shushila Devi earned a promotion to Deputy Superintendent of Police for sports. Olympian K Chinglensana Singh takes over as Deputy Director of Sports Promotion. The state will also launch the Manipur Sports Development Foundation. This entity will manage corporate funds for athletic growth.

Drivers also get relief. Officials cut vehicle fitness penalties from Rs 50 to Rs 10 per day. This applies to delays between February 1, 2020, and December 31, 2025. Finally, the government granted land in Kha Bishnupur for a new Press Club. Lawmakers will convene for the eighth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on September 2, 2026.
