Imphal: Manipur officials cleared the path for a new government medical college in Senapati. The state Cabinet greenlit the project during an August 11, 2026, meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Mantripukhri. This facility brings 100 MBBS seats to the district annually.
Senapati District Hospital faces major construction work. Workers must overhaul the site to meet clinical and infrastructure standards required for medical training. The project sits near the Nagaland border in an area home to the Mao, Poumai, Maram, and Thangal tribes, plus Zemei and other local groups.
The Mao Students’ Union thanked Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and his Cabinet for the move. They claim this addresses a long-standing public need. The union described the decision as a "historic milestone for the people of Senapati district and the surrounding region."
Leaders expect the college to improve local healthcare access. It also provides new educational paths for area students. The union urged the government to fast-track construction. They want the facility running at full capacity as soon as possible.
