Imphal: Tarong village in Manipur’s Kamjong district officially outlawed all hunting and trapping on August 15. The ban covers the entire jurisdiction of the village. It aims to stop the decline of local wildlife. The move follows an awareness campaign spearheaded by environmental activist Jojo Robertson and the Jojo Robertson Foundation.

The community designated a forested zone known as Lungshietram as the Tarong Wildlife Conservation Site. This move bars residents, neighbors, and visitors from harming any animals or birds. The rules also safeguard native trees and plants from further habitat loss. The area sits near the Myanmar border. It acts as a vital corridor for species facing heavy human pressure.

The Jojo Robertson Foundation stated the initiative aims to promote coexistence between local communities and wildlife while encouraging long-term environmental protection and climate resilience in the hill areas of Manipur. The Tarong Village Authority is now asking surrounding village councils and civil society groups to respect the protected status of the land. They want this project to spark similar conservation efforts across the Northeast.
