Imphal: The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry and Dairying pledged full support to protect the historic Manipuri Pony. Former Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba forced the issue on March 17. He told Parliament the breed faces an existential threat. Polo groups in Imphal backed him up. They reported incidents of theft and illegal meat trades.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh confirmed the government is ready to pay for conservation. The state already issued Rs 29.99 lakh to 86 owners during the 2025-26 fiscal year. This money helps cover the soaring cost of feed and medical care. Owners need the help. Officials are currently mapping out land for the animals to graze.

Surveys are underway in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts. The goal is to secure permanent grazing grounds. The state government is partnering with polo clubs to manage the population. They are also running workshops to teach owners how to fight off common diseases. These animals define local culture and polo history. The Minister stated, "The Centre was committed to providing the necessary financial and administrative assistance for conservation efforts."
