Manipur Farmers Demand Millions in Unpaid Conflict Compensation

Imphal: Manipur farmers are fed up. The COCOMI Farmers Wing is demanding answers regarding the state government's failure to pay compensation to 10,286 growers. These farmers have left 9,807.428 hectares of land fallow since the conflict erupted on May 3, 2023. Fear of violence keeps them from their fields.

Ph. Syamchand, convenor of the group, spoke at a press conference at the United Committee Manipur office in Lamphelpat. He noted that affected families filed their claims through district offices for the 2024-2025 season. District Monitoring Committees verified the applications before sending them up the chain to the Agriculture Department and eventually the Home Commissioner.

The Agriculture Department calculated a total payout of Rs 8581.565 crore. They submitted their official recommendation on February 18, 2026. Despite this, the Home Department stalled the process by questioning the rising number of applicants. Syamchand called the delay unacceptable. "Why compensation had not yet been released to the affected farmers despite their applications having undergone verification and being recommended by the concerned department," he asked.

The group wants the government to cut the red tape. They are calling for the immediate release of funds to help the struggling agricultural sector.
