Imphal: Armed individuals stormed Kailenjang village on Monday, torching three homes in a violent episode that rattled the Kangpokpi-Senapati border. The assault occurred between 11 am and 1:30 pm, roughly 5 km west of the Senapati police station. No casualties were reported. The targeted properties belonged to village chief Nengneichong Chongloi, Kamkhohao Chongloi, and Helthang Haokip.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire before the fire gutted the structures, destroying personal valuables and land documents. Residents of the seven-to-eight-household village fled toward Taphou Kuki for safety. Assam Rifles personnel later arrived to secure the area. Questions persist regarding why the CRPF stationed nearby failed to prevent the arson. One resident noted, "The incident reportedly triggered panic in the area and raised concerns over the safety of families who had been displaced from the region."

The village has a history of trauma, having been displaced during the 1992 Naga-Kuki ethnic clashes. This latest violence comes as government officials and the United Naga Council remain deadlocked over an economic blockade. Meanwhile, a separate electrical fire destroyed a home and three rental units in Kangpokpi on August 8. The blaze left 75-year-old Thangjangam Haokip with an estimated loss of Rs 1,34,94,500. Local youths rescued two children trapped inside before the roof collapsed.

Suspected cadres of the NSCN-IM allegedly triggered the blaze one day after a visit to the district by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, the Committee on Tribal Unity, and the Kuki Students Organisation have since issued sharp rebukes, labeling the fire a calculated act of violence intended to sabotage peace efforts.

Kuki leadership expressed outrage that the arson occurred while state officials were in nearby Senapati meeting with the United Naga Council. The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills questioned whether the militants were operating with impunity while their political representatives sat at the negotiating table. The Kuki Students Organisation warned that such provocations are testing the restraint of local residents, noting that the ongoing economic blockade has crippled the district for more than three months.

New details emerged regarding the state delegation at the Senapati talks. The meeting included Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, who were present in the region during the Kailenjang arson. The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills criticized the government for the security lapse, arguing that the administration must address grievances through dialogue rather than allowing the blockade to continue at the expense of the local population.

Separately, violence flared again on Tuesday night. Armed miscreants torched nine houses belonging to the Liangmai Naga community in Tokpa Liangmai village. The blaze broke out around 9:30 pm in the area situated between Mahika and Lower Thanamba. Local authorities have yet to issue a statement on the destruction, and the identity of the attackers remains unknown as the region braces for further instability.

The Liangmai Naga Council reported that the Tuesday night blaze at Tokpa Naga village leveled approximately 10 houses and a church, marking a higher toll than initial counts suggested. The Council lashed out at security forces stationed just meters away, accusing them of gross negligence for failing to intervene in a known sensitive red-zone.

Amid the growing fallout, the Liangmai Naga Council has called for a time-bound investigation and immediate state-funded compensation for the displaced families. They warned that the lack of security, despite their warnings about the area's vulnerability, points to a deeper dereliction of duty by those tasked with maintaining order.

New reports indicate the Tuesday night attack at Tokpa Liangmai village involved the destruction of at least 12 kutcha houses and a church, surpassing earlier estimates. Armed men reportedly opened fire during the raid near Tumnoupokpi Thangal. Local sources claim the attackers arrived from a rival community, though official confirmation remains pending.

The Liangmai Naga Council has called for a formal inquiry into the conduct of security personnel stationed near the site. They argue that the proximity of forces to the red-zone area during the blaze suggests a failure to prevent the attack and demands immediate investigation into potential dereliction of duty. The Council is also pushing for state-funded rehabilitation for families left homeless by the fire.

New details from the Tokpa Naga Village Authority specify that the armed men who raided the village on Tuesday night wore camouflage uniforms. Before torching the structures, the assailants opened fire on the community.

The village authority also identified the security forces in question as CRPF personnel and Kangpokpi Police stationed at the nearby Kalapahar High School. They claim these units failed to respond to emergency calls or provide assistance while the village burned.

New reports from village authorities covering nine local settlements confirm the assailants at Tokpa Naga were armed with automatic weapons. Survivors allege the attackers assaulted civilians during the raid and held residents at gunpoint to steal four mobile phones belonging to M. Roselin, Th. Basanta, Th. Dany, and Th. Wizonliu.

The Committee on Tribal Unity has since criticized security forces for what it calls partisan enforcement. The group pointed to a heavy-handed response at the Keithelmanbi Military Colony, which led to a confrontation with Kuki-Zo women, as a sharp contrast to the slow reaction time seen during the Kailenjang arson. CoTU also hit back at the United Naga Council, rejecting demands to scrap the Suspension of Operations agreement and remove Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen as unconstitutional.

Amid the rising friction, the nine village authorities have issued a joint appeal for restraint. They warned communities to avoid retaliatory violence and ignore inflammatory misinformation as tensions continue to simmer across the district.

Tensions hit another level as a Kuki-owned Bolero pickup was snatched from Mayangkhang Thangal village and later found burnt to a shell near the Nagaland border in Senapati. The vehicle belonged to Lamtinchon Chongloi, a daily wage earner, prompting the Kuki Students Organisation to slam the hijacking as a heartless blow to a family already struggling under the district's three-month economic blockade.

The KSO claimed that the Kuki community has refrained from any counter-blockade tactics, allowing Naga residents to move essential goods without interference. They are now pushing for the arrest of the perpetrators and financial restitution for the loss of the pickup.

New accounts from the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Sadar Hills, suggest the pickup was intercepted at Ningthoupham Mayangkhang by individuals alleged to be Naga People's Organisation (NPO) volunteers. Occupant Haopu Chongloi claims he, his brother, and a Naga friend from Daili village were hauled to a Senapati office for negotiations before being told the vehicle would be released the following day. Chongloi stated his group was assaulted and stripped of belongings during the encounter, though he admitted they could not definitively confirm the attackers' organizational affiliation.

The Mayangkhang Village Authority has hit back, issuing a statement on August 14 that slams the KSO's account as baseless and fabricated. The authority claims no such incident occurred within its jurisdiction and warned the KSO to withdraw its statements, accusing the student body of trying to drag the Thangal community into the conflict through misinformation.

KSO Sadar Hills claims the pickup was returning to Kangpokpi with essential goods obtained from a Naga acquaintance when intercepted at Mayangkhang. The organization alleges the occupants were denied food, water, and medicine during their detention. They are now threatening that failure by the NPO and state authorities to provide compensation and take responsibility could trigger a wider breach in relations between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities.

Occupant Haopu Chongloi provided additional details, noting that their group was accompanied by a Naga friend named Pukhroni from Daili village. Haopu stated that their group was taken to an office in Senapati for negotiations regarding the vehicle's release before they were released and later learned of the vehicle's destruction via social media. The Mayangkhang Village Authority countered these claims on August 14, dismissing the reports as a calculated attempt to smear the Thangal community and demanding an immediate, unconditional retraction from the student body.
