India Post halts mail routes in Manipur following arson attacks

Imphal: The Department of Posts cut off three primary mail lines in Manipur effective immediately. The Office of the Superintendent of Post Offices issued the order on July 29. Security concerns forced the move. Recent incidents involved postal consignments being set on fire. One specific attack in Shangkai destroyed 36 bags of courier items destined for the Ukhrul Post Office. An FIR has been filed regarding that loss.

The suspension hits the Imphal-Dimapur, Imphal-Mao, and Imphal-Ukhrul routes. The Chief Postmaster General of the North-East Circle gave the direct orders. Consequently, the booking of all surface mail services has stopped across the region. The department remains at a standstill until further notice.

Repeated disruptions along National Highway-2 made transport impossible. Trucks could no longer move safely. The department cited the "prevailing security situation and recent incidents affecting the movement of postal mail" as the primary reason for the shutdown. Officials at the Imphal Head Post Office and local sub-offices received the directive for immediate implementation. Vast quantities of undelivered mail remain stranded at various facilities as authorities wait for the region to stabilize.
