Imphal: The Forest Department held a half marathon to mark the 72nd Wildlife Week. Roughly 500 people joined the run. Participants gathered under the theme Together for Wildlife to show support for the cause.
The race started at Lamboikhongnangkhong Lampak. Runners moved toward Phayeng before returning to the start. Chief Conservator of Forests L. Joykumar, IFS, flagged off the event. Chief Conservator of Forests Gaithaolu Thaimei, IFS, and other senior officials also joined the pack.
L. Joykumar addressed the crowd after the race. He explained that Wildlife Week serves to build awareness about the natural environment. He noted that humans rely on nature for survival. Joykumar said, "Wildlife Week is observed every year to create awareness about the importance of wildlife and the natural environment, stressing that human life cannot exist without them."
He described the race course as a symbol of human coexistence with nature. He pushed for collective action in protecting local species. Every creature holds value. Officials handed out certificates and cash prizes to the top five finishers. Every other runner received a participation certificate.
