Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on October 24 the formation of a committee representing all 36 communities in the state. This move aims to build peace, harmony, and progress. It follows a direct query from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the existence of such an inclusive body. Singh plans to consult Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba and all state MLAs to finalize the structure.
The announcement came during a felicitation ceremony for hill chiefs at the Darbar Hall in Imphal. This occurred during the Mera Hou Chongba Festival 2026. Singh stressed that collective sacrifice defined the state, citing historical struggles like the Anglo-Manipur War and the Seven Years Devastation. He urged the public to back this new effort to protect their shared heritage.
Earlier that day, Singh inaugurated the Hill (Tribal) Chiefs Guest House at the Palace Compound. The project cost Rs 7.1238 crore, funded by the North Eastern Council. The Department of Tourism implemented the plan, while the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd handled the construction. Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba noted that past festival attendees from the hills had to rely on hotels for lodging.
The facility removes that hurdle. Singh remarked, "The government's efforts to establish the guest house would be remembered by the people of Manipur." He hopes the guest house will bridge the gap between hill and valley residents, noting that the Maharaja historically spent over 100 days a year in the hills. The initiative encourages more interaction, aiming to strengthen brotherhood across the region.
