Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh demanded unity among the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities on October 17. He insists that all residents identify as Manipuris to end strife and restore order. The state houses 36 distinct communities that have historically protected the region.
He spoke at the Jan Sevak Mahakumbh in Imphal. This event concluded the month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, which ran from September 17 to October 17. The campaign celebrated 25 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public service. Statistics show that 400,000 people attended events at 6,122 different venues.
The Chief Minister highlighted the Manipuri language as a vital link for the people. He demanded more widespread use of the language to keep the state cohesive. Progress requires a stable environment. He stated, "The country could not be considered developed without the development of the state."
Khemchand Singh pointed to major infrastructure gains. He cited the National Sports University and improved railway connectivity as keys to moving goods. He also noted that the government removed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, from several zones. The Centre also introduced the Inner Line Permit system following public pressure to shield indigenous populations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister deferred the Census in the state to address concerns about the National Register of Citizens.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam joined the call for progress. He admitted the government cannot solve the crisis alone. He urged all local groups to build mutual trust and drop their grievances. Arts and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, various MLAs, and the Chief Secretary attended the meeting where officials handed out certificates to local students and teachers.
