Kuki Inpi Manipur Defends Suspension of Operations Pact

Imphal: The Kuki Inpi Manipur slammed demands to scrap the Suspension of Operations agreement. A coalition of Meitei and Naga groups pushed to end the deal with the Kuki National Organisation and the United People’s Front. The Kuki apex body rejected the call on September 10, 2026. They claim the groups misunderstand why the deal exists.

This arrangement began in 2008 as a three-way pact. It stops fighting to allow political talks. Successive governments kept the deal alive for years. The organization argues that tearing it down serves no purpose. The Kuki Inpi Manipur noted that the agreement is the main way the central government talks to Kuki representatives. "The political aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people cannot be determined by another ethnic community," the group stated.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur countered claims that individual crimes should void the entire contract. They pointed to the Joint Monitoring Group as the correct body to handle ground rule violations. They maintain that the Kuki political question involves only the central government, the state government, and the armed groups. They told the Centre to ignore outside pressure to terminate the pact. Instead, they want stricter enforcement and a functional, long-term political settlement.
