Guwahati: The Assam government cleared a local holiday for the Kamrup Metropolitan district on Monday, November 9. Diwali prompted the move. The General Administration Department issued the order following instructions from the Governor of Assam.
All state government offices, schools, and colleges within the district will shut their doors. Financial institutions will also stay closed, falling under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881, as directed by a Ministry of Home Affairs notification from June 8, 1957.
Diwali celebrations start ahead of the holiday. The five-day festival kicked off Friday, November 6, with Dhanteras. Residents observe the festival on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon night, to worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. The official notification states: "The holiday will apply to all state government offices and educational institutions falling within the jurisdiction of Kamrup (Metro) district."
The Amavasya tithi runs from 11:27 am on November 8 until 12:31 pm on November 9. While Lakshmi Puja timings differ by location, Drik Panchang sets the New Delhi window between 5:54 pm and 7:50 pm on November 8. Guwahati residents should check local panchang guides for their specific worship timings.
