Sivasagar Officials Schedule Eviction at Jamuna Wetland

Guwahati: Sivasagar district authorities will clear illegal structures from the historic Jamuna wetland on November 7. The decision followed high-stakes talks between the administration and the All Tai Ahom Students' Union. Officials stepped in after the student group took matters into their own hands.

For three days, union members tore down buildings they claimed were encroaching on the waterbody. Tensions peaked when the group declared a 12-hour district bandh for November 6 to protest the land grab. The administration acted fast. They officially committed to a government-led eviction drive to resolve the dispute.

The union called off the strike as a result. ATASU officials stated that the "decision taken at a meeting between the administration and the All Tai Ahom Students' Union" secured the move. Now, the state prepares to reclaim the site.
