Guwahati: Indira Devi, known as Jenny, is pushing for a new investigation into senior Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat. She wants a fresh DNA test to confirm the paternity of her son. The case traces back to 2002. Jenny claims a party worker brought her to Rawat’s Yamuna Colony home when she was 16.
She stayed there for nearly two months. Jenny alleges she became pregnant during this stay. She claims she was sent to a Nari Niketan women's shelter under the false promise of hostel housing. She suggests officials check records to verify if she spent time at the facility, which she says housed people with mental health conditions. Jenny said: "My primary demand was that the Congress leader be punished if the allegations were established and that her son receive his father's name and the rights she believes he is entitled to."
The controversy, dubbed the Jenny episode, first broke in 2003. Jenny gave birth to a child that June at a Dehradun government hospital. She insisted Rawat was the father. Then-Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari ordered a CBI probe. Investigators performed a DNA test at the time. The results did not match Rawat. He received a clean chit from authorities. Rawat served as the Revenue Minister in that Congress government. He remains a senior party member active in current election campaigns.
