Guwahati: Assam has cleared a 12 percent horizontal reservation for former Agniveers in state government jobs. The policy kicks in with annual recruitment drives starting in 2027. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the update on X. He stated the move aims to "recognise the service of former Agniveers and create new employment opportunities for those who have served in the Indian Armed Forces."
The cabinet locked in this decision on October 4, 2026. The Home (A) Department issued the formal notification. It covers direct recruitment vacancies across several key state departments. Eligible candidates must be permanent residents of Assam. They must have finished a full four-year term in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force under the Agnipath Scheme. Each applicant must hold an official Agniveer Certificate from their discharge.
Jobs will open in the Assam Police, Forest Department, and Fire and Emergency Services. The State Disaster Response Force, Prisons, Home Guards, and the Excise Department also fall under the quota. Officials say the plan values the discipline and experience these veterans bring to public service. Further rules on specific posts and application steps will follow standard guidelines.
