Assam targets two lakh new government jobs

Guwahati: Assam has 15,43,350 registered job seekers. Labour Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed these figures to the Legislative Assembly on July 27. The tally includes 14,67,171 skilled and 76,179 unskilled workers as of June 30, 2026.

The state government now aims to create 2 lakh new positions. A task force headed by the Chief Secretary started work on May 19, 2026. This group will monitor the job roadmap over the next five years. Recruitment depends on their upcoming recommendations. Chief Minister Sarma told the House, "government functioning has not been affected and recruitment will be taken up after the Task Force submits its recommendations."

Vacancies currently exist due to resignations, retirements, and administrative changes. Officials confirmed there is no plan to restructure government departments. Meanwhile, the state monitors labour conditions across 1,837 brick kilns with 61,792 workers. E-Shram portal data shows 2,57,880 construction workers registered from 2022 through July 21, 2026. Labour courts hold 448 pending dispute cases.

Authorities identified 6,211 child labourers since 2017-18. They rescued 1,145 and rehabilitated 6,123. Officials are now finalizing rules for the Code on Social Security and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code from 2020.
