Guwahati: Two young men died in separate accidents on National Highway 127(A) within the last week. The string of fatalities has local residents demanding immediate safety fixes for the 38-km stretch of road connecting Pathsala to the Bhutan border. The route is riddled with deep potholes, sharp curves, and poor drainage.

Navajit Talukdar died on the spot at 11 pm on October 21 after his motorcycle struck an electricity pole in Kenduguri. The pillion rider, David Das, survived the crash but remains in critical condition. Only two days later, on October 23, Dipak Roy died in a second crash near the Ghatbar area.

Locals point to a specific two-kilometre section between Pathsala Zero Point and Kenduguri as the primary danger zone. They claim electricity poles sit directly on or too close to the road. This obstruction forces motorists, especially those on motorcycles, to dodge permanent structures at high speeds.

Residents want the district administration, National Highways authorities, and the electricity department to launch a joint safety inspection. Their list of demands is clear. "They have urged the district administration, National Highways authorities and the electricity department to conduct a joint safety inspection and take corrective measures." The group is pushing for the relocation of poles, filling of potholes, and the addition of warning signs and protective barriers to stop the body count from rising.
