Guwahati: Two people are dead and two others are injured after a wave of crashes tore through National Highway-15 in Assam's Lakhimpur district over the last 48 hours. The carnage struck between Narayanpur and Banderdewa, sparking local outrage over road safety.
Ranjan Saikia died Wednesday morning while walking along the Bhogpur stretch. A speeding vehicle hit him. Local residents believe he was struck by two separate vehicles because of his head injuries. This follows a fatal crash at the same spot two days prior. A Tata Harrier with license plate AS 23 B 4006 slammed into a motorcycle, registration AS 07 B 5796. The impact killed 59-year-old schoolteacher Biren Borah of Chengelijan village and left two pedestrians wounded.
A separate hit-and-run at Aamtol in Narayanpur also left two people with serious injuries. An unidentified driver struck their motorcycle, marked AS 07 E 8102. Locals rushed the pair to a hospital, but their names remain unknown. These incidents follow the August 29 death of nurse Nirmali Rajkhowa, who died at Madhavpur after a hatchback hit her scooter.
Residents blame the frequent violence on high speeds and a lack of police enforcement. They also cite poor road design. "Adequate paved or earthen shoulder space has not been maintained in parts of the Narayanpur stretch, forcing pedestrians and two-wheeler riders to share limited road space with fast-moving vehicles," local sources said. People now demand an official safety assessment of the highway to protect travelers and walkers.
