Guwahati: The Margherita branch of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha handed out cash grants to 233 students this week. These students all come from local tea garden worker families and passed their HSLC or Higher Secondary exams during the 2025-2026 cycle. The program serves 38 different tea gardens across the region.
Rupesh Gowala, a former Assam minister and two-time Doomdooma MLA, served as the chief guest for the event. He currently acts as the general secretary for the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha. Local leadership also attended, including union president Gautam Dhanowar, general secretary Harinanda Gorh, and vice-president Nepal Tanti. The union has run this aid program for two decades.
Gowala spoke to the crowd about the long-term impact of the funding. He noted that the money helps families cover rising school costs. "The assistance would help them meet their educational expenses," Gowala said. The union plans to keep pushing resources toward tea garden youth to ensure they stay in school.
