Two Dead After Separate Highway Crashes in Assam

Guwahati: Two fatal crashes hit National Highway-27 in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Friday, October 9. The wrecks killed two youths and left two others fighting for their lives.

The first wreck happened at 11 am near Semdikhor under Mahur Police Station. Two girls on a scooty traveling from Maibang to Haflong hit roadside barriers after losing control of their bike. Locals identified the victims as 22-year-old Puja Maibangsa from Kalachand and 20-year-old Rani from Bashabari. Rescuers rushed both to Haflong Civil Hospital where doctors moved them to the intensive care unit. Puja Maibangsa died from her injuries at 7:30 pm.

A second wreck occurred at 9:30 pm near Jatinga Bridge. Two men on a two-wheeler heading from Mahur to Haflong lost control and plunged into the Diyung River. Police identified the victims as 17-year-old Joel Riame of Boro Haflong and 18-year-old Lalchungir Khelma of Diyung Hrangkhol. First responders pulled the pair from the water and drove them to Haflong Civil Hospital.

Hospital staff declared Lalchungir Khelma dead shortly after arrival. Joel Riame survived the crash but remains in critical condition. He was "referred to Guwahati for further treatment" due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances behind both accidents.
