Guwahati: A loaded truck stalled in a massive crater on National Highway 27 yesterday. The breakdown occurred in the Maibang subdivision of Assam’s Dima Hasao district. This incident puts a spotlight on the dangerous state of this primary transit route. The road is failing.
Drivers are fed up. They pay toll taxes regularly but claim they see zero maintenance or safety improvements in return. According to these road users, the lack of caution boards and warning signs makes travel hazardous, especially at night or during heavy rain. The road surface is crumbling under the weight of heavy cargo.
Truckers are now demanding action from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. They also want the National Highways Authority of India to step up. One driver stated, "Despite paying toll tax, several stretches of the highway lack proper road conditions and basic safety measures." Commuters and drivers alike are pushing for immediate repairs to fix the potholes and secure these vulnerable stretches before more vehicles get stranded.
