Guwahati: Road accidents killed nine people and injured 105 others in Guwahati during the Durga Puja celebrations. These casualties occurred over a six-day stretch from October 16 to 21. Gauhati Medical College and Hospital staff treated 114 victims in total during this window. The hospital remains the primary source for these grim statistics.

Festive traffic clogged the streets. People flocked to puja pandals in record numbers. This surge created a dangerous environment for city commuters. Of the 114 patients admitted, 67 were men and 15 were women. Officials did not list the gender for the remaining 32 individuals.

Two-wheelers caused a massive chunk of the chaos. Many riders faced extreme danger while navigating the crowded city roads. Twenty percent of the injured arrived in critical condition. These victims required ongoing medical attention long after their initial intake. Regarding the state of the wounded, an official source noted, "Around 20 per cent of the injured were reportedly in critical condition and continued to require medical attention."

The city recorded a 15 percent drop in total accidents compared to the same period last year. Despite this dip, the death toll highlights persistent safety failures. Authorities stress the need for better traffic control during high-volume holidays.
