Guwahati: Majuli district administration and the Transport Department hit schools and public spaces on September 24. They held a special road safety awareness drive. Fatal crashes are climbing across Assam. Officials from the Transport and Police departments laid out traffic rules and the hard costs of breaking them.
Students learned the basics. Wear helmets on bikes. Use seat belts in cars. Keep phones away while driving. Never touch a steering wheel before turning 18. The administration pushed these lessons to curb reckless behavior. The district administration said the awareness sessions were aimed at making students more conscious of safe mobility and responsible road use.
Officials demanded that students spread the word to family and peers. Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways shows the urgency. Assam saw 655 fatal accidents on state highways in 2023. That number sat at 646 in 2022. It was 601 in 2021 and 596 in 2020. The campaign targeted multiple locations across Majuli to turn the tide.
