Mon officials battle health and infrastructure crisis after floods

Kohima: Health and Family Welfare Minister P. Paiwang Konyak met with district officials at the District Hospital in Mon on July 25. He demanded six-hour status reports from staff. The minister handed over Rs 3 lakh to the Chief Medical Officer to bolster emergency medical preparedness. He warned officials against filing unnecessary relief claims.

Floodwaters contaminated wells in Tizit town, sparking an acute drinking water shortage. The minister pushed for close cooperation between the CMO and district administration to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks. CMO Dr. Supongmenla confirmed current medicine stockpiles, while Medical Superintendent Dr. Aman Konyak noted that landslides have severed road access, causing a sharp drop in hospital visits.

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak reported that landslides have crippled power and communications across the region. Separately, Advisor W. Chingang Konyak inspected damaged sites in Naginimora on July 25. Flash floods hit the area on July 19. The EAC reported that 274 households were affected or displaced, with one person dead in Upper Tiru and five injured in Naginimora town.

The Dikhu Suspension Bridge, which links Naginimora and Shetap village, is broken. All vehicular traffic to Tiru and Wakching stopped. The final remaining road to Nazira, Assam, sits partially submerged. The Konyak Union Naginimora Unit urged the government to "expedite restoration of damaged roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure to ensure early resumption of normalcy and safeguard livelihoods."
