Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya ordered the Narcotics Control Bureau to file a status report on local drug control efforts. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh issued the directive during a hearing on Friday. The court wants specific details on how the agency plans to curb trafficking within the state.
State authorities already submitted their own progress update on October 20. Assistant Advocate General told the bench the government and police provided a full account of their enforcement actions. The court turned its attention to the federal role following a submission by Senior counsel SP Mahanta. He highlighted the start of Operation Trident 2026. This initiative began on October 23 to crush cross-border drug networks throughout the Northeast.
The operation hit hard. Coordinated strikes across Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur yielded 18 arrests. Investigators uncovered nearly Rs 100 crore in illegal hawala transactions tied to cartels. Authorities froze roughly 1,400 bank accounts and seized assets valued at Rs 17.82 crore. The court mandate requires Assistant Solicitor General Dr. N. Mozika to present the NCB report, covering measures specifically targeting the drug problem inside Meghalaya.
The court set the next hearing for December 7. Addressing the scope of the regional challenge, the court remains focused on the efficacy of these interventions. As the process moves forward, officials must prove their results in the field.
