Zunheboto Moves Meat Sales Indoors to Boost Public Safety

Kohima: The Zunheboto Town Council opened two butcher outlets on November 2 to move meat sales off the streets. Officials want safer food. This transition forces vendors into regulated indoor facilities to meet public demand for clean, reliable meat sources.

Niukali K Assumi, a ZTC councillor managing public health and slaughterhouses, pushed the initiative to lift hygiene standards. The project provides local butchers a structured workspace while keeping inventory out of the elements. Moving these sales is a major step for public dignity and community health.

One shop sits at the Daily Market. The second outlet operates in the ZTC building near the road leading to the Post Office in Zunheboto. These sites ensure meat handling follows strict sanitary rules. Assumi noted the shift promotes better habits for everyone, stating: "The transition would ensure meat is sold under proper regulatory and sanitary standards, providing a cleaner and safer environment for consumers while also creating a better working space for local butchers."
