Shillong: Meghalaya is digging into why Jorabat keeps flooding. The border stretch between Meghalaya and Assam turns into a swamp every time it rains hard. Thousands of commuters get stuck in the mess. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma spoke on Wednesday, August 5, about the persistent waterlogging.

Road construction is the prime suspect. Sangma pointed to the flyover area where the land sits significantly lower than the structure. It acts like a bowl, catching runoff and speeding up the rising water levels. The government is now tasking Deputy Commissioners with mapping out exactly how the building work ruins drainage.

Officials are not ruling out other causes yet. They need to fix this fast. "We are studying all aspects and looking at whatever measures we can put in," Sangma said. The administration wants to cut down on the gridlock and keep traffic moving. They expect to finalize a plan once the current assessment wraps up.
