Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed on Monday that he will coordinate a meeting between his state leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. They intend to stop the finger-pointing and fix the persistent flash flooding in Jorabat. The states need a plan.
Sarma recently went on the offensive. He blames unchecked construction in Meghalaya for the disasters hitting Guwahati. Specifically, he pointed to earth cutting at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya campus as a major culprit. The water runoff now puts the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at risk during heavy rains.
Dhar remains optimistic about the upcoming talks despite the public friction. "I have told the CM that we will meet the Assam CM and resolve the matter collectively. We are not here to blame each other but to resolve the issue," Dhar said. Officials hope this high-level sit-down ends the standoff between the two neighbors.
