Guwahati: The Meghalaya government is now reviewing serious allegations from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He claims that massive hill cutting and building projects in the Jorabat area fuel flash floods in Guwahati. Rainwater flows from the hills, hits the border, and slams into the city drainage system.
Cabinet Minister Marcuise Marak says the state will wait for a full report before taking a stance. He spoke to the press on Monday. "Every detail will come out once the examination is done," Marak said.
Sarma points to a report from a Supreme Court-appointed empowered committee. The panel found that illegal construction, specifically around the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, threatens Guwahati. The danger extends to the city airport too. The matter is currently before the Supreme Court.
Sarma wants Meghalaya to clamp down on construction in Jorabat. He noted that Meghalaya previously intervened in Byrnihat to fix environmental issues. The Assam Chief Minister remains in contact with his Meghalaya counterpart to find a fix. He warns that the flood crisis will only get worse without stricter building rules.
