Guwahati: Meghalaya handed over Rs 1 crore to the Assam Chief Minister's Relief Fund to boost rescue and recovery efforts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the donation on August 4. He thanked Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for the cash injection during the ongoing disaster.
The gift shows regional unity. Sarma highlighted the bond between the two states. He posted to social media, "This gesture reflects the enduring spirit of solidarity that binds our North Eastern sister states together, always by each other's side."
Floodwaters are finally starting to drop. Despite the improvement, the death toll reached 87 after two more people died in Sivasagar. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports that six districts still face heavy flooding.
Nearly 1.28 lakh people remain displaced. Sivasagar is the hardest hit area with 55,000 residents impacted. Charaideo and Jorhat also remain under water, reporting 35,000 and 20,000 affected people respectively.
