Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded a halt to the politicization of student examination protests on July 24. Speaking in Dispur, Sarma stated that the state must focus on rescue efforts for victims of the ongoing floods. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already initiated work to fix systemic examination issues. The Chief Minister cited the smooth conduct of the NEET exam and a consistent increase in medical seats as proof of progress. "We all want our examination system to be better. The Prime Minister has already taken initiatives in this regard. The protest should not be politicised," he said.
Sarma also sounded the alarm on a different disaster looming over Guwahati. He pointed to uncontrolled construction in the Jorabat-USTM belt across the Meghalaya border. A Supreme Court-appointed committee recently filed a report detailing environmental dangers in the region. Sarma warned that the area's rapid development threatens to overwhelm Guwahati with unmanageable water runoff. The current drainage infrastructure cannot handle the surge.
The Chief Minister has reached out to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to address the issue. He urged the neighboring state to consider the impact of its development policies on Assam. The matter currently sits before the Supreme Court for a pending hearing. Sarma promised that his government will present its case aggressively when the court convenes. He fears that without immediate changes, the city will become impossible to maintain.
