Guwahati: Police padlocked the entrance to the Guwahati Press Club on October 23, trapping demonstrators inside. The lockdown occurred at 1:00 p.m. following a rally organized by the Forum for Social Harmony-Nagarik Udyog. Participants had gathered to demand the immediate cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the finalized completion of the National Register of Citizens.

Protesters chanted slogans targeting Election Commission leadership as they attempted to exit the building. They shouted, "Gyanesh Kumar must resign," while demanding the electoral revision process stop. The crowd questioned if officers had sealed the club specifically to crush their dissent.

Prominent intellectual Hiren Gohain addressed the gathering alongside educationists Ghanashyam Nath and Rituraj Kalita. Gohain accused the Election Commission of losing its independence to serve the ruling BJP. He claimed the SIR exercise aims to disenfranchise Muslims and Dalits. The Forum stated the country faces a moment where citizens must act to protect their constitutional voting rights.
