Shillong: Meghalaya officials are keeping quiet while they probe Assam's claims that their hill-cutting activities are flooding Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blames construction in the Jorabat hills for unmanageable water runoff hitting the capital. He insists this development threatens the city and its airport.
Sarma points to a Supreme Court-mandated committee report that labeled illegal building near the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya a major risk. The Assam leader wants his neighbors to stop the chaos. "I will only appeal to the Meghalaya government to see how development in and around Jorabat can be controlled… otherwise the flood scene in Guwahati will be unmanageable," Sarma said.
The issue heads to the Supreme Court soon. Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Marcuise Marak responded on Monday, stating the state is currently reviewing the situation. "Every detail will come out once the examination is done," Marak said. The Meghalaya government previously stopped work in Byrnihat due to pollution issues, and Sarma hopes for similar restraint in Jorabat to save Guwahati from future disasters.
