Shillong: Commuters and airport travelers from East Jaintia Hills are walking for kilometers at the Jorabat border. Protesters are blocking taxi access into Guwahati. This transit stoppage follows rising interstate tensions.
Happy E Rymbai, president of the Iatyllilang Drivers and Tourist Taxi Association, says vehicles from 4 Kilo, Ladrymbai, and Lumshnong cannot cross. Rymbai tried to talk to the protest leaders but failed. He could not find anyone in charge to negotiate safe passage for his drivers.
Drivers with ML-11 and ML-04 registrations are caught in the crossfire. Rymbai insists these cars have no history of involvement in such fights. He observed that while his fleet was initially clear, ML-05 cars from Shillong are now getting targeted. Rymbai noted, "The DTTA has not joined other associations in retaliatory measures to stop Assam-registered vehicles from entering Meghalaya, citing different organizational protocols."
Routes to Kalain, Badarpur, and Umrangso remain open for now. Rymbai warned those drivers to stay alert against people looking to stir up trouble. He wants the government to step in and fix the situation immediately. He continues to ask groups in Assam to let his specific taxi groups back on the road to Guwahati.
