Assam and Meghalaya Chiefs Push for Federal Infrastructure Funding

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Guwahati on Wednesday. They pushed for more central support to speed up Externally Aided Projects. These state leaders want more money for building roads and social programs. The talks centered on bumping up capital spending across the Northeast.

Sarma shared news of the meeting on X. He noted that the team focused on creating fresh investment channels for regional development. "We made a strong case to bring a new impetus to the pace of Externally Aided Projects in both of our states, which will open new investment channels for physical and social infrastructure," Sarma stated. These specific projects rely on cash from international development institutions to fund local improvements.

Sitharaman liked the pitch. She promised federal help to push state development goals forward. This meeting matters because both states need extra cash for their projects.
