Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a 150 crore project on July 15 to stop the recurring flash floods in Jorabat. The plan falls under the proposed Guwahati Ring Road development. It aims to secure the area against future water damage. Sarma shared the details during the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The move follows a violent flood that recently crippled the area. This location sits as a vital entry point between Assam and Meghalaya. "Day before yesterday we witnessed a violent flash flood in the Jorabat area. Under the Detailed Project Report of the Guwahati Ring Road project, we have earmarked Rs 150 crore specifically to address the flash flood problem in Jorabat," Sarma told the House.
The government also plans to build a four-lane highway to cut down on chronic traffic jams. The state will upgrade the Digaru-Narangi road to serve as an alternative route for travelers moving from Jagiroad toward Guwahati. Sarma asked MLAs from the Dimoria and Dispur constituencies to assist with the expansion. He expects the Ring Road to resolve these logistical headaches for good.
