Guwahati: Man-made obstructions have triggered severe flooding in Kaliadinga village, located in the Juria area of Assam's Nagaon district. Rising water levels have swallowed several bighas of paddy fields, ruining the standing crop. Families are struggling as knee-deep water spills inside their homes.
Locals point to eight culverts designed to drain excess rainwater. Some individuals allegedly blocked these passages for personal gain. Residents claim that others raised the embankments of nearby fishery ponds, which effectively choked off the natural flow of water. The stagnant water has also cut off vital roads, making travel impossible for those living in the area.
Villagers have tried to get help. They submitted multiple written and verbal complaints to the local administration and authorities, but nothing has changed. According to residents, "no effective action had been taken so far" to address the mess. They are now calling on the government to clear the blocked culverts and fix the drainage network before more agricultural land and homes are lost to the rising water.
