Guwahati: Rising floodwaters are swamping Batadrava in Assam. Residents say illegal ponds and clogged culverts are to blame for the chaos. Water has nowhere to go. The trapped runoff is flooding homes and destroying local crop fields.
Around 90 per cent of people living in the greater Haydubi area rely on farming to pay the bills. If the water stays, the harvest dies. Locals claim fish farmers built ponds without permits and blocked the drainage system. They want the Nagaon district administration to clear the culverts and shut down the illegal ponds immediately.
Devotees traveling to the Batadrava Than, the historic site founded by 15th-century saint Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, are also struggling to reach the grounds. Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma inspected the flooded site this week. He promised quick relief and confirmed he is working on a coordinated plan with all departments to provide a permanent solution to the problem. Residents fear the water will keep rising if officials move too slowly.
