Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged Rs 150 crore to kill the recurring flash flood crisis in Jorabat. He made the announcement on July 15 during the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The funds come from the Detailed Project Report for the upcoming Guwahati Ring Road. Officials are waiting for technical designs from consultants before sending them to IIT Guwahati for vetting.

Jorabat is a vital link between Assam and Meghalaya. Recent floods paralyzed the junction. "Day before yesterday we witnessed a violent flash flood in the Jorabat area. Under the Detailed Project Report of the Guwahati Ring Road project, we have earmarked Rs 150 crore specifically to address the flash flood problem in Jorabat," Sarma told the House. The Chief Minister expects the Ring Road to prevent future disasters.

Traffic congestion also remains a constant headache. To clear the bottlenecks, the government will turn the Digaru-Narangi road into a four-lane highway. This route will serve commuters heading from Jagiroad to Guwahati. Sarma asked MLAs from the Dimoria and Dispur constituencies to help secure the necessary land.

The government is thinking big. Sarma revealed a plan to pour Rs 2 lakh crore into transport infrastructure over five years. The state aims to boost power generation to 8,457 MW, up from 450 MW. Officials also plan to build a new medical college in Mankachar within five years. Furthermore, the state targets creating one lakh jobs by building new satellite cities to spark economic growth across the region.
